Suppling exercises come in pairs.
The fully raised head (nose in the horizontal) is balanced by the lowering of the neck. It can also be balanced by a position in which the chin touches the torso (like in the over bending of the neck in sports horses), however in this case done in the stand still.
The counted walk, head raised to maximum height, is balanced by a free forward walk, reins hanging. A few steps forward and a few steps backing up without stopping is a variation, which also is balanced by a free forward walk, reins hanging.
Shoulder-in is balanced by haunches-in. The pirouette is balanced by the reverse pirouette.
Begin with the movement that comes easy. Then add the counter movement. Stay light, don't force yourself on the horse, and yet, do go to the limit. Do what the horse needs. Add up smalls things well done. Get and stay involved. Start a love affair.
As concerns the shoulder-in. Prerequisit is the half-halt d.l.G.-style, i.e. a small lifting up and rolling back of the primary hand. To raise the head half-halts can alternate.
Movements of the hand begin as body motions. The art begins with never pulling back and/or supporting the horse's weight.
